DIY Christmas Decorations

Kerry Jayne Photography

There’s little that is more lovely than a beautifully decorated Christmas tree but baubles can come with a hefty price tag as well as there often being one or two casualties each year, especially if pets or small children are involved. These DIY origami style decorations are the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit whilst also making some beautiful, low cost additions to your tree! You can make them with any paper you want, patterned, plain or textured and often scrapbook paper books are perfect for the job.

Follow the steps below to make these and get decorating!

YOU WILL NEED:

  • 10cm x 20cm paper strip, plain or printed

  • Scissors

  • Thread or Ribbon for hanging

  • Double sided sticky tape

Step 1.

Take your paper and begin to fold it in a concertina style on the shortest side, making each folded section 1-1.5cm.

Step 2.

Repeat until the whole piece of paper is folded.

Step 3.

Now, take your concertina and fold it in half

Step 4.

With a sharp pair of scissors trim the ends so they are both rounded, you may need to do the two sided separately but try and get them to match up as best as possible.

Step 5.

Now cut a length of thread or ribbon around 40cm long and tie it in the centre where you have folded the concertina in half. Make sure to leave two equal length tails either side.

Step 6.

Cut a piece of double sided sticky tape the length of the inside of the folded paper and stick it down.

Step 7.

Peel off the double sided tape and stick down the thread or ribbon so that the two tail lengths are lying next to one another.

Step 8.

Stick both inside edges together. You can add another length of double sided tape on top if you want to.

Step 9.

Now, taking the outer edges place a strip of double sided tape on one side.

Step 10.

Stick the two sides together making sure to bend the centre around the spot you tied off.

Step 11.

Tie the top two lengths of thread or ribbon together to create a loop.

Now you have a little paper decoration!

To make bigger decorations simply increase the size of the papers keeping the same proportions and to create a narrower decoration simply make the folds smaller. You can also experiment with cutting different shapes into the ends of the concertina to give different effects.

Happy Making! x
